Odense, Denmark—An association between hormonal contraceptives and an increased risk for glioma (brain tumors) in younger women has been found in a Danish case-control study. Researchers from Odense University Hospital and the University of South Denmark found a nearly twofold increased risk of glioma among long-term users of hormonal contraceptives. The risk was also higher for current or recent use than for past use. It is important to keep this apparent increase in risk in context, however, as the overall benefit for women who take oral contraceptives, such as a lower risk of ovarian cancer, may still outweigh the possibility of developing brain cancer.
